Remedial pizza crust questions

Somehow, it seems that I have never before baked, by hand, anything that requires kneading. I'm trying to make the yeast pizza dough recipe from How It All Vegan, and everything went fine until it was time to knead the dough. As soon as I started, the dough coated my hands and my cutting board in thick layers of goo. Help! A bunch of the dough has now been washed down the sink (necessary so that I could have clean hands to type), but I'd like to try again. Can somebody please tell me how to handle the dough so that it's a nice ball instead of an insidious mess? I would really appreciate it!

It came out great! Even with a big wad of dough washed away, it turned out to be a *very* thick crust, almost like a Sicillian pizza or something--or maybe my pizza pan is just small? Anyway, I made it with tomato sauce, mushrooms, artichoke hearts, and FYH cheese, and it's delicious.
