substitution for margarine in baking

I was wonering if I would be able to substitute any kick of cheaper vegetable oil in place of margarine in a cookie recipie. I know the ratio probably wouldn't be 1:1, as margarine has more water in it, so the oil is a denser fat. The reason I'm asking is because being a student on a budget, making cookies with margarine is getting a little too expensive. I could just do without them, but damn it's a tasty way to get my flax (as an egg replacer).
