a general question about baking...

Say you like a certain recipe but only want to make half as many servings. I've often heard that by simply cutting the ingredients portions in half (i.e. 1c -> 1/2c) you are messing up the recipe.

Like this recipe I have for cookies - it makes 24 cookies. I would rather make closer to 12. Should I just cut all the ingredient portions in half and it'll be fine?

Perhaps this is a stupid question. I'm no baking expert!
