Substitutes for Maple Syrup?

Does anyone know of a cheaper substitute for maple syrup?

I'd love to make some of the recipes in Sinfully Vegan (I just got it last week) but they all have insane amounts of maple syrup. It seems to me that she's just replacing the sugar in all the recipes. And, if that's the case, would sugar work as a replacement? And, if so, how much sugar would equal how much maple syrup?

tofurkey basting

i looked through the memories.. but didn't see very much.

what do you use to baste your tofurkey?

i've read quite a few times now, in a few different places, that their basting recipe is pretty awful. so, what do you use?

and if you prepare it differently than directed, what do you do?

any recommendations greatly appreciated!

okay, so i really want to make kreeli's pumpkin cheesecake for thanksgiving.

it calls for:
1 tbsp ground cinnamon
2 tsp ground nutmeg
1 tsp ground ginger

however, i am a poor college student, and thereby have a few tablespoons worth of pumpkin pie spice, although i suppose i could've sprung for a little of each spice, but it's too late for that.
so, my question.
should just add the combined quantities of spices (2 tbsp), or some other idea?

any help would be wonderful.

Salt Toasted Tofu??

There is this amazing dish called Salt Toasted Tofu in a very popular Vietnamese restaurant called Mai's in Houston.

I moved away from Houston, and miss that dish from time to time.

I have searched for this recipe with no luck.

It was tofu that was either deep fried or something like it.. It was crisp on the outside and still chewy on the inside. It was in some sort of white light sauce I think. I must find a way to make it! Its driving me nuts!

Anyone who thinks they know a recipe kind of like that.. I will love you forever if you could post a recipe or your thoughts on how to make it.

Mousse pie?

I bought A tub of now and zen's "hip whip" and want to make a chocolate mousse pie thing. I'm thinking of a graham cracker crust. I bought a dark chocolate bar as well, but I don't know how to go about making a filling with this stuff. I couldn't find anything in the memories.
