"death by chocolate" pie

k, so, tonight i will be attending a potluck/cookout with vegetarians and non-vegetarians alike. my dish is pie. until today, i have never made a vegan pie that wasn't pumpkin. however, thanks to the wealth of memories in this community, i came up with my own bastardization, which i am about to share. and trust me when i say, it is delicious, easy, and completely fool-proof.

Help figuring out temps + times - bbq "pork" + roasted potato skewers

I'm going to make some oven roasted garlic potatos along with some bbq or seasoned 'pork' with bbq dipping sauce for a potluck i'm going to. My plan of action is to cook the roasted potatos according to the instructions I have, cook the "pork" pieces (i'm winging it on how I'll do that), assemble the skewers and then baste with BBQ sauce and bake a little longer. I usually just make stuff up as I go along while cooking and it turns out fine, but since I'm doing this for a potluck and I'm the only vegan, I don't want to screw up and make a bad impression (OMG, VEGAN FOOD IS TEH GROSS!).

So, any tips on good procedures for making bbq "pork" n roasted garlic potato skewers? Marinades, methods, any advice you have would be appreciated. Thank you!

lemon bars

This is a recipe from Veggie Life magazine. I've made it twice in the past month with good results both times. I did have a mini-disaster with the crust the second time, so don't do what I did and try to sub canola oil for the margarine. You won't get a crust unless you drastically reduce the amount. Anyways, here's the recipe. These are every bit as good as lemon bars made with eggs.

Vegan Lemon Bars
1 c white flour
1/2 c vegan marg. or coconut oil (presumably in solid form)
1/4 c powdered sugar

Combine all and mix until it forms a Play-doh like mass. Press into a 9 by 9 pan, making a 1/2 inch rim of crust. Bake 20 minutes at 350 F, until set but not brown.

1 c granulated white sugar*
grated zest of one lemon
3 tbs lemon juice
1/4 tsp salt
1/2 c unsweetened applesauce
1 1/2 tsp baking powder

Stir together sugar, lemon, zest, and salt. Combine applesauce and baking powder in a separate bowl, whisking well. It will foam. Don't freak out. :)  Combine mixtures and pour over hot crust.
Bake 50 minutes or until center is set. (It may still look a little liquid in the very center. Shouldn't be a problem.) Cool and sprinkle with powdered sugar, if desired.

*I used sucanat the second time I made this and the molasses flavor of the sucanat overwhelmed the lemon. Use Florida Crystals or some other vegan white sugar. The sucanat might be good if you wanted to use this recipe to make pecan pie bars, though. I've also been wanting to try this with lime, mango, and orange. If you do, let us know how it turns out!

most missed food recipes

possibly off-topic but...

since becoming vegan, what is your most missed food that you don't eat anymore? have you found any comparable recipes? have you been able to perfectly veganize anything that you're proud of and want to share?

I miss those salted nut rolls with the caramel and the sweet white middle part. I used to make them homemade, and I can't figure out how to veganize it.

feeding my face

since i got home from school in early may, my face has been FREAKING OUT like NEVER BEFORE. i don't know what the deal is. i've tried everything, from changing my facewash regimen to eliminating makeup completely, but nothing is working. i was wondering if anyone had any recipes for knew of any foods reputed to be good for the complexion (ingested or otherwise)? i've read a lot about yogurt being good for skin, but will soy yogurt have the same effects? has this ever happened to anyone else? help? please?

oh, and uh, sorry if that was tmi. but i'm getting a bit obsessive over the state of my face.

Pizza Dinner

This was so good I had to brag and share. It's so simple. You can get fairly good premade crusts and sauce at most grocery stores that are decent. They may not be excellent for you but they are good for times like this when you have to have help making things...I just had surgery...

Ok. This will be majorly picture heavy so they will be behind the cut. There are ten in all!

I hope everyone is doing well!
