Recall on puffed cereals

At least 23 people in 14 states have been sickened by the same strain of salmonella found in two breakfast cereals recalled by Malt-O-Meal, the federal Food and Drug Administration (FDA) said Saturday.

Malt-O-Meal voluntarily recalled its unsweetened Puffed Rice and Puffed Wheat cereals April 5 after finding salmonella contamination during routine testing.

Three people have been hospitalized, but no deaths have been reported, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

The FDA said the recalled products were distributed nationally under the Malt-O-Meal brand name and private labels, including Acme, America's Choice, Food Club, Giant, Jewel, Laura Lynn, Pathmark, Shaw's, ShopRite, Tops and Weis Quality.

As of Friday, no Washington state cases had been reported to the CDC. For more information: tinyurl.com/4ejaop.

Meat substitution with substance

Normally when I'm veganizing I try to leave any kind of meat substitute out and just work with vegetables. This time I don't think it will work. My recipe requires simmering the meat for an extended amount of time, so I was wondering if anyone could suggest what substitute I can use. My worry is that it could deteriorate or lose its consistency. I'm guessing tempeh or seitan is at least risk of having that happen, but I'd like to hear your comments.

Help! subbing out red wine.. can it be done?

So here I am, 7pm on a Sunday, about to throw together a nice big batch of Seitan-Portobella Stroganoff when I realize there's not a speck of red wine in the house nor a single place in the whole of Toronto to go and get it.

Luckily, since my house is full of hipsters, there's a more than healthy variety of beers in the fridge and half a bottle of some cheap white plonk I could potentially use instead.

What do you lovelies recommend I sub out for the red? I've got a small array of vinegars I could also employ, if that makes any difference.

(ps - if you live in downtown TO and have red wine, i will totally feed you stroganoff if you wanna bring it and have a cooking party with me and my squeeze. i'm making lemon custard bars for dessert!)
