Egg-free preserved fruit?

I'm getting pretty cheesed off with buying glacé cherries, candied peel and crystal ginger, only to find it's got such a high sulphur dioxide content that my cake ends up being a gas producer on a par with unprocessed soybeans in potency. One time I bought some dried apricots, and there was so much of this nasty stuff in them they had a quite obvious eggy aftertaste. Are there any brands of preserved fruit that aren't, to be frank, made by idiots? I'm looking for stuff available in the UK, but international stuff's always cool.
