Rice in soup/stew question

I put a soup/step to cook in the crockpot on low last night with the hopes that it would be nice and tasty and ready for me to package and take to work this morning.  

About 2 1/2 hrs before I was ready to go I added some traditional brown rice to it and let it continue to cook on low.

The rice is still crunchy!!!  Still edible, but certainly odd tasting.

Is the lesson learned that I need to precook rice before I add it to something.... or did I just not let it cook long enough in the crock pot?
