The waffles that weren't

So, I tried making the PPK Lemon Corn Waffles tonight. No-go.

The batter stuck horridly to my waffle iron (which I've been using since childhood), the waffles pulled apart in the middle, didn't solidify enough, it was a mess.

I was able to make little johnny cakes with the batter, in muffin cups, and a few lackluster pancake-like objects, but the whole thing was not what it was supposed to be.

Anyone else have this problem? The reviews over at ppk were glowing!

I used O'Soy yoghurt, canola oil, and bottled lemon juice if it makes any difference. I also used 1/2 almond milk and 1/2 soy milk, as I didn't have enough soy. Could that be the culprit?

I really wanted waffles.

the original recipe:
Dry ingredients
1 1/4 cups +2 Tablespoons flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
3/4 cup cornmeal

Wet ingredients
1/4 cup corn oil (veg or canola oil will do)
2 cups soy milk
1/4 cup soy yogurt
zest and juice from 2 lemons
1/4 cup sugar

Preheat waffle iron.

Sift together the dry ingredients in a large mixing bowl. In a medium bowl, mix together all the wet ingredients (including sugar and lemon juice/zest) until well combined. Create a well in the center of the flour mixture and slowly blend in the wet ingredients until combined.

Make your waffles according to manufacturers directions.
