what to cook with mom on mother's day

Instead of buying my mom presents, I usually cook for her and take her out for the day (for example, on her birthday last year, I made apricot french toast and we made our own pottery at a place downtown). For Mother's Day this year, I thought I'd combine the two so that we could do something in the kitchen together. But:
1. She really possesses no cooking/baking skills
2. I'm not accustomed to having other people in the kitchen with me, so I don't know what things are pair-friendly, and I probably don't know how to divvy up tasks

Cookies immediately came to mind, because we can bake and then decorate those, and they spend less than half an hour in the oven (during which time we can make icing and things, instead of just standing around). But then again, I don't think either of us want a box of cookies sitting around with just the two of us in the house. What other culinary delights can we make together? Preferably, it might take a while, and not have much empty time (such as two hours of nothing waiting for bread to rise, or an hour for rice to cook).
