tracking down an Irish brown bread recipe

I stayed at a hostel in Dublin earlier this summer and for breakfast, they served "homemade" brown bread. It was really freakin' good, unlike any wheat bread I've eaten in the US. It was very dense and substantial, soft but not fluffy, and if it had been sweeter might've been like a muffin, so it was really good with margarine and jam. It had an oatmeal taste to it too and made amazing toast.

I've been googling for recipes, but I'd like to have the input of people here before I invest time and ingredients into anything. Do you have any good recipes to suggest, particular things to include in my search, key ingredients I should check for?
