Ew! Too much oil!

I've been slowly trying to covert to veganism and since I love cooking I thought I'd try out various recipes I've found. Now, I've made things that were specifically vegan recipes, but it wasn't until last night when I tried to convert a regular recipe I found.

I took this recipe:
1/2 cup sugar
1/2 cup packed brown sugar
1/2 cup butter, room temperature
1/2 cup peanut butter(I usually make this measurement "heaping", and it's more realistically about 3/4 cup peanut butter.)
1 egg
1 1/4 cup flour
3/4 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1/4 teaspoon salt
and tried to substitute Earth Balance for the butter and applesauce for the egg. Here is my question, when I made these the dough tasted great, but it was extremelllllyy oily. So oily that the cookies completely flattened out like pancakes when in the oven. I was assuming it was because of the Earth Balance, but I'm really not sure. Is there anything I could add or not add that would prevent this from happening?
