Trying to re-create a sauce



A few years ago my husband and I were celebrating our anniversary at a fine dining restaurant here in Vancouver. It was a vegan set menu that they prepared specially for us! The main course included a stuffed, roasted bell pepper, sitting in a small pool of smokey jalepeno sauce.

I would like to recreate this sauce, but the memory of the sauce is barely there! On top of that, the restaurant doesn't exist anymore, so I can't call and ask.

The sauce was not quite as thick as gravy, and was quite spicy and smokey. It was powerfully flavourful. My husband says it had a tomato base.

I have done google searches for a recipe that might trigger some tasty memories, but have so far failed. I have tried using words like "coulis", "reduction", and "sauce", but I'm not sure how else to describe the sauce.

If any of you have a recipe for a sauce that is smokey, jalepeno-flavourful, spicey, and pairs well with roasted and stuffed bell pepper, please share!
