canned pumpkin substitute?

Hi all, I'm looking at the "Pumpkin choc chip" cupcake recipe from VCTOTW and here in Australia we don't have "canned pumpkin". I have whole uncooked butternut pumpkin/squash and I'm cool with cooking it up but I have no idea what the flavour and consistency is supposed to be like to get the same effect as canned pumpkin. Does anyone have experience with subbing home-made pumpkin for canned pumpkin?

Also, on a side note, I went to this new cafe which is serving organic foods and noticed they don't have a lot of vegan stuff, so I suggested making some cupcakes for them to sell with their coffees etc. I'd be using recipes from VCTOTW, is this unethical? I wouldn't want to step on any toes, but I'm super passionate about cupcakes and I am pretty practiced (indeed famous in my circle of friends/associates) with making cupcakes. They asked for some samples, so at this stage its purely hypothetical.
