"Buttermilk" question

I've been baking using soy milk + vinegar as a buttermilk sub, but I'm trying to stop using soy milk. Would almond or oat milk work for this, or does it HAVE to be soy? If it has to be soy, does anyone have a soy-free way of making something like buttermilk? Thanks!
