Yellow moong daal

Everyone seems to have their favourite version of this dish, so here's mine:

2 cups red lentils
1/2 tsp turmeric
2 tbsp ginger paste/grated ginger
5 cups water

2-3 tbsp canola oil
2-3 tbsp garlic paste/crushed garlic
2 tsp cumin seeds
1 tbsp cinnamon
Red chili flakes to taste
2-3 tsp kala namak (Indian black salt)

* Put first 4 ingredients in a pressure cooker and cook on high for 5 minutes; then quick release by putting cooker in sink and running cold water over the sides
* Meanwhile, in a seperate pot, gently heat oil, add garlic and cumin seeds
* When cumin seeds are popping, add all other ingredients and stir well until pressure cooker is released
* Add lentils to pot and combine well; if too runny, heat a while and stir
